Privacy Policy
Knowly Education, LLC · Effective date: July 22, 2026 · Last updated: July 22, 2026
Knowly Education, LLC ("Knowly," "we," "us," or "our") is a North Carolina limited liability company that provides a subscription platform of educational content, curriculum planning, scheduling tools, and related services for parent-directed education (the "Services"). This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, share, and protect information when you visit knowlyeducation.com, use our platform and apps, or communicate with us by email, phone, or text message.
If you are an enrolled family, this Privacy Policy works alongside your Parent Services Agreement and, for children under 13, our Children's Privacy Notice & Parental Consent. If this Privacy Policy conflicts with your Parent Services Agreement, the Parent Services Agreement controls.
1. Information We Collect
From parents and guardians
- Account and contact information: your name, email address, phone number, mailing address, and account credentials.
- Enrollment and scheduling information: information you provide about your family's educational program, registered days, and reporting entries.
- Payment information: billing details processed by our payment processor. We do not store full payment card numbers on our own systems.
- Communications: messages, requests, and correspondence you send us.
From children (with verified parental consent)
We collect information from children under 13 only after a parent or legal guardian has received our COPPA direct notice and provided verifiable parental consent. With consent, we may collect:
- Account basics: first name or nickname, age or grade level, and username.
- Learning activity: answers, work product, progress, scores, response patterns (such as timing and error patterns), and how the child uses the platform.
- Device information: technical identifiers (such as IP address or device ID) used to run the Services and keep them secure.
- Voice recordings (only with separate optional parental consent): a child reading aloud, answering orally, or practicing pronunciation. We analyze these recordings to assess reading fluency, oral comprehension, and language pronunciation. We do not use a child's voice to identify them.
- Typing rhythm (only with separate optional parental consent): the pattern and timing of a child's typing, used only to confirm the child is the one doing their own work.
- Photos and videos (only with separate optional parental consent): media a family uploads or a child creates in the app.
We collect only what we reasonably need. We never require a child to provide more information than is necessary to participate in the Services.
Collected automatically
- Usage and device data: IP address, browser type, device identifiers, operating system, pages viewed, and interactions with the Services.
- Cookies and similar technologies: used to keep you signed in, remember preferences, secure the platform, and understand how the Services are used. See Section 10.
2. Children's Privacy (COPPA)
The Services are designed for use by families, including children under 13 under a parent's direction. We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), including the FTC's amended COPPA Rule.
- Notice and consent first. Before we collect personal information from a child under 13, the parent receives a direct notice describing exactly what we collect and how we use it, and must provide verifiable parental consent. Consent is verified through the parent's enrollment payment transaction or an alternate FTC-approved verification method offered at signup.
- Optional features are off by default. Voice recording, typing-rhythm analysis, and photo/video features are each enabled for a child only if the parent separately opts in to that feature. Saying no to an optional item only turns that feature off.
- We never sell a child's personal information.
- We never share a child's identifiable information — name, image, voice, recordings, or learning data — with outside companies for their own use. The only outside parties that handle it are service providers (such as hosting, payments, communications, and security vendors) working for us under contracts that prohibit any other use.
- We never target advertising to children.
- Parents stay in control. A parent may review the information we have collected from their child, have it deleted, and revoke consent to stop further collection at any time, through Parent Portal → Privacy or by emailing info@knowlyeducation.com. We will verify that the person making the request is the child's parent or guardian before acting. Revoking consent is free and takes effect promptly; some features may stop working without the data they need.
- Material changes require new consent. If we materially change how we collect or use children's personal information, we will notify parents and obtain fresh consent before the new practice applies to any child.
3. How We Use Information
- To provide, operate, and personalize the Services, including each child's learning experience.
- To assess skills such as reading fluency, oral comprehension, and language pronunciation.
- To confirm a child's work is their own (where the parent has enabled typing-rhythm analysis).
- To show parents their child's progress and support parent-directed education planning, scheduling, and reporting.
- To process enrollment, billing, and payments.
- To communicate with parents about the Services, including service notices, billing, consent confirmations, and support.
- To keep the Services safe and secure, prevent fraud and abuse, and enforce our terms.
- To comply with legal obligations.
- To improve the Services using de-identified data — data stripped of anything that could reasonably identify a parent or child.
4. Text Messaging (SMS)
With your consent, we may send text messages to the mobile number you provide — for example, account notices, scheduling reminders, billing alerts, consent confirmations, and customer support replies. By opting in, you agree to receive these messages.
- Message frequency varies based on your account activity and preferences.
- Message and data rates may apply, depending on your mobile carrier plan.
- Reply STOP at any time to cancel and stop receiving messages. Reply HELP for help, or contact us at info@knowlyeducation.com.
- Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Text messaging originator opt-in data and consent will not be shared with any third parties, excluding the aggregators and service providers necessary to deliver the messages to you.
5. How We Share Information
We do not sell personal information. We share information only in these circumstances:
- Service providers. Vendors that perform services for us — such as cloud hosting and storage, payment processing, communications delivery (email, SMS, voice), identity and consent verification, analytics, and security — under contracts that limit their use of the information to providing services to us and prohibit any other use.
- De-identified data. We may share and license de-identified data — data that cannot reasonably be traced back to any parent or child — as described in Section 6.
- Legal requirements and safety. When required by law, subpoena, or legal process, or when necessary to protect the rights, safety, or property of a child, our users, the public, or Knowly. We report unlawful content involving minors to the appropriate authorities as the law requires.
- Corporate transactions. If Knowly is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, information may be transferred to the successor — but only if the successor assumes our commitments regarding previously collected data, including the children's-data commitments in Section 2.
A child's identifiable information is never sold, licensed, rented, or disclosed to any third party for that third party's own use — even if we receive an offer to purchase it. If we ever want to share a child's identifiable information with a third party for that third party's own use, we will come back and ask the parent for separate permission first — the law requires it, and until the parent says yes, nothing is shared. These commitments survive termination of your account.
6. De-Identified Learning Data
Every family that uses Knowly helps build a clearer picture of how children actually learn — where understanding clicks, where it breaks down, and what helps. We believe insights like these can improve education well beyond our own platform, and they are also part of how we fund Knowly and keep it affordable for families.
Here is exactly how that works, and where the line is:
- The line that never moves: your child's identifiable information — name, image, voice, recordings, typing-rhythm data, or any learning data in identifiable form — is never sold, shared, or licensed to anyone for their own use. Full stop.
- What we do use: de-identified data — data from which your child's name, likeness, contact information, and all other personal identifiers have been removed, and which has been processed so it cannot reasonably be used to identify your child or your family. De-identified data belongs to Knowly, and we may analyze, license, publish, share with research and commercial partners, and otherwise commercialize it.
- It stays de-identified: we never attempt to re-identify de-identified data, and every recipient is contractually prohibited from attempting to re-identify it.
In short: what we learn from the data may be shared and sold; who your child is never will be.
7. Data Retention
We keep personal information only as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, consistent with our written data retention policy. We never retain a child's personal information indefinitely. Current defaults:
- Voice recordings: deleted after 90 days, unless the parent chooses to keep them.
- Photos and videos: deleted after 1 year, unless the parent chooses to keep them.
- Typing-rhythm data: deleted when no longer needed to verify the related work, and in any event within 1 year.
- Learning data: retained while the account is active.
- Consent and enrollment records: retained for the life of the account plus 4 years to document compliance.
When a parent requests deletion or revokes consent, we delete identifiable child data within 30 days, with deletion propagating to backups on their scheduled destruction cycle. Deletion does not apply to de-identified data or to records we are required by law to retain.
8. Security
We maintain a written data security program with administrative, technical, and physical safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the information we hold. All personal information — including photos, videos, and voice recordings — is encrypted in transit and at rest. Access to children's media is restricted to personnel who need it, under least-privilege controls. No system is impenetrable, and we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work to protect your family's information and to respond promptly to any incident.
9. Your Rights and Choices
- Access and update: you can review and update account information through the Parent Portal.
- Children's data rights: review, delete, or stop further collection of your child's information at any time (see Section 2).
- Marketing communications: opt out of marketing emails using the unsubscribe link in any message. Opt out of text messages by replying STOP.
- State privacy rights: depending on your state of residence, you may have additional rights — such as the right to access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of your personal information, and the right to opt out of certain processing. To exercise these rights, contact us at info@knowlyeducation.com. We will verify your identity before acting and will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights. If we decline a request, you may appeal by replying to our decision.
10. Cookies and Analytics
We use cookies and similar technologies that are necessary to operate the Services (sign-in, security, preferences) and, where enabled, analytics tools that help us understand usage in aggregate. We do not use third-party advertising cookies on child-directed portions of the Services, and we do not permit third-party behavioral advertising to children anywhere in the Services. Most browsers let you control cookies through settings; disabling necessary cookies may prevent parts of the Services from working.
11. Third-Party Services and Links
The Services may reference or link to third-party curriculum providers, testing providers, venues, and other resources. Those third parties operate under their own privacy policies, which we do not control. Review their policies before providing them information.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated policy on this page with a new effective date and, for material changes, notify you through the platform or by email. Material changes to how we handle children's personal information require fresh verifiable parental consent before they apply to any child (see Section 2).
