This Privacy Policy explains what information Knowly Education, LLC (“Knowly,” “we,” or “us”) collects, how we use it, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and what choices you have. It applies to our website, our desktop application, and our services (together, the “Services”).
IMPORTANT: IF YOU ARE AN ENROLLED PARENT, THE CHILDREN’S PRIVACY NOTICE, PARENTAL CONSENT, AND DATA AUTHORIZATION AGREEMENT YOU SIGNED (THE “CONSENT AGREEMENT”) IS THE DOCUMENT THAT GOVERNS YOUR CHILD’S PERSONAL INFORMATION. IF ANYTHING IN THIS POLICY CONFLICTS WITH THAT AGREEMENT, THAT AGREEMENT CONTROLS.
1. Who We Are and What This Policy Covers
Knowly is a North Carolina limited liability company providing tools and materials for parent-directed education. Our contact information appears in Section 15. This Policy covers three groups: visitors to our website; parents who create and manage an account; and children enrolled by a parent. Section 5 is the children’s section, and it is the one that carries our obligations under the federal Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”).
2. Information We Collect From Website Visitors
If you only browse our website, we collect your IP address, device and browser type, operating system, pages viewed, referring page, and approximate region derived from your IP address. If you contact us, request information, join a mailing list, or submit a form, we collect the information you give us—typically your name, email address, telephone number, and whatever you write in the message. If you enroll, we collect account and billing information; payment card numbers are collected and stored by our payment processor, not by us.
3. Cookies and Analytics
On our public marketing pages, we use cookies and similar technologies that are necessary to operate the site, remember your preferences, and measure traffic and performance. We may also use measurement technologies provided by third parties, including Google, to understand how people find us. Those providers may use the information they collect for their own purposes under their own privacy policies. We do not use these technologies on any page where you are signed in to an account, anywhere in our desktop application, or anywhere personal information is collected from a child, and we never provide these providers with any information about a child or with any parent’s name, email address, or account information. You can set your browser to refuse cookies, though parts of the site may not work. We honor Global Privacy Control and similar browser-based opt-out signals.
4. How We Use Website Information
We use the information in Sections 2 and 3 to operate and secure the site, respond to your inquiry, process enrollment and payment, send you information you asked for, measure and improve our marketing, and comply with law.
5. Children’s Privacy
Our website is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from a child through the website, and only a parent or legal guardian may create an account or enroll a child. We collect personal information from a child through the application only after the parent has received the Consent Agreement, signed it, and been verified as the parent.
What we collect from a child. Account basics (first name or nickname, age or grade level, username); learning activity (answers and written work, progress, scores, mastery determinations, timing and error patterns, and platform usage); and device and technical information (IP address, device identifier, operating system, application version). With the parent’s separate opt-in consent, we also collect voice recordings, typing-rhythm data, and photographs and video including photographs of handwritten work. We never require a child to disclose more personal information than is reasonably necessary to participate.
How we use it. To deliver and personalize instruction; to identify and target gaps in understanding; to assess and grade work, including reading fluency and pronunciation where voice consent is given; to verify that a child’s work is the child’s own where typing-rhythm consent is given; to report progress to the parent; to operate, secure, troubleshoot, and support the Services; to comply with law; and to create de-identified data as described in Section 9.
Standardized testing. If you sign your child up for a standardized test through Knowly, you give us your child’s legal first and last name and gender, which our testing partner, Seton Testing Services, requires for the test and score report. We keep them with that test order only, share them only with Seton, and delete them with your child’s records.
Our disclosure practices. We do not disclose a child’s personal information to any third party for that third party’s own purposes. The only outside parties who receive a child’s personal information are service providers who support our internal operations—hosting and infrastructure, payment processing, security and monitoring, email delivery, and speech and handwriting processing—and, when a parent signs a child up for a standardized test, our testing partner, Seton Testing Services. We never sell a child’s personal information, never disclose it for advertising, and never permit a child to make personal information publicly available through the Services.
Parental rights. At any time, and free of charge, a parent may review the personal information we have collected from their child; correct it; direct us to delete it; refuse to permit further collection or use of it; and revoke any consent in whole or as to any optional feature. To do so, email info@knowlyeducation.com. We will verify that the requester is the parent, using the contact information associated with the consent, before we act. Revocation stops the affected collection immediately and deletion is completed within thirty (30) days. If a feature will stop working, we will tell the parent before the change takes effect. We may terminate a service if the data it requires has been withdrawn.
If you believe we have collected personal information from a child without parental consent, contact us at info@knowlyeducation.com and we will delete it.
6. Our Data Retention Policy
We retain personal information collected from a child only as long as reasonably necessary to fulfill the specific purpose for which it was collected, and never indefinitely. When it is no longer reasonably necessary, we delete it using reasonable measures to protect against unauthorized access or use during deletion.
These are the defaults:

Deletion propagates to routine backups on their scheduled destruction cycle. The only exceptions to this schedule are information we are required by law to preserve and de-identified data, which is no longer personal information.
7. Biometric Data Policy
This Section is our publicly available policy governing biometric identifiers, and it applies to typing-rhythm data. Typing-rhythm data means the timing between and duration of a child’s keystrokes and the statistical profile derived from that timing. We collect it only with the parent’s separate written release, and only to compare a session against the child’s established typing profile in order to flag sessions in which the typing does not appear to be the child’s. We do not use it for security authentication.
8. How We Share Information
We share information with service providers who support our internal operations, under written contracts that prohibit any other use. We disclose information where required by law, valid legal process, or a governmental request, and where necessary to protect the safety of a child or to comply with mandatory reporting obligations. If we are party to a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of all or substantially all of our assets, information may transfer to the successor only if the successor agrees in writing to be bound by the commitments we made when the information was collected; if a successor wants to use a child’s identifiable information in a way our commitments do not permit, it must obtain the parent’s new consent first. We share limited website activity for advertising purposes as described in Section 3, and never any information about a child.
9. De-Identified Data and Our Public Commitment
De-identified data means data derived from information we hold from which the name, likeness, voice, contact information, and all other identifiers have been permanently removed, and which has been processed so that there is no reasonable basis to believe it can be used, alone or in combination with other reasonably available information, to identify any individual. De-identified data belongs to Knowly, and we may analyze, license, publish, and commercialize it. This is how we fund and improve Knowly.
We publicly commit to the following, and this commitment is binding on us: we will maintain de-identified data in de-identified form; we will not attempt to re-identify it; we will not disclose it alongside any key, token, or other means of re-identification; and we will contractually prohibit every recipient from attempting to re-identify it or from combining it with other data for that purpose.
10. Security
We establish, implement, and maintain a written information security program with safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the information we collect from children and to our size and operations. The program designates personnel accountable for it; identifies and, at least annually, reassesses internal and external risks; designs and maintains safeguards keyed to the volume and sensitivity of the information at risk; regularly tests and monitors the effectiveness of those safeguards; and is evaluated and modified at least annually. We take reasonable steps to confirm that service providers can maintain the confidentiality, security, and integrity of the information and obtain written assurances that they will. Personal information is encrypted in transit and at rest, and access to voice recordings, images, video, and typing-rhythm data is restricted to personnel who need it, is logged, and is not permitted on personal devices. No system is impenetrable, and we do not promise that ours is.
11. Your Privacy Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to know what personal information we hold about you, to access a copy of it, to correct it, to delete it, to limit our use of sensitive personal information, to opt out of sale or targeted advertising, and to appeal a denial of any of these requests. We do not sell personal information or use it for targeted advertising, so those opt-outs are already the default. To make a request, email info@knowlyeducation.com. We will verify your identity before responding and will respond within the time your state’s law requires. A parent may exercise these rights on behalf of a child, as described in Section 5.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Policy. We will not apply a material change retroactively to information already collected. For other changes, we will post the updated Policy with a new effective date.
13. Third-Party Sites
Our website and the Services may link to sites we do not control, including curriculum providers, testing providers, and partners. Their privacy practices are their own, and this Policy does not apply to them.
14. Text Messaging (SMS)
With your consent, we may send text messages to the mobile number you provide — for example, account notices, scheduling reminders, billing alerts, consent confirmations, and customer support replies. By opting in, you agree to receive these messages.
- Message frequency varies based on your account activity and preferences.
- Message and data rates may apply, depending on your mobile carrier plan.
- Reply STOP at any time to cancel and stop receiving messages. Reply HELP for help, or contact us at info@knowlyeducation.com.
- Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Text messaging originator opt-in data and consent will not be shared with any third parties, excluding the aggregators and service providers necessary to deliver the messages to you.
